Lacking enthusiasm, feeling cynical and being disengaged from your job are some of the symptoms most professionals feel when they are burned-out. Professionals who are burned-out think it's because they work too hard and for too long. While this may be true, science writer at the Association for Psychological Science, Alexandra Michel, penned that burn-out is caused when deadlines, work demands, working hours and other stressors overshadow recognition, rewards and relaxation.
Although it is a common condition which many professionals experience, it should not be taken lightly. Michel stresses that burn-out is "not just a state of mind, but a condition that leaves its mark on the brain as well as the body."
Consider these pointers if you feel that you are burned-out:
Disconnect from work
One of the main causes of burn-out is exhaustion. Technology has made work accessible to professionals anywhere in the world, at any time. It's difficult for people to disconnect from work when they are constantly receiving business e-mails on their mobile devices. Consciously set some time aside to disconnect from work after hours and over week-ends so it doesn't feel like you're always working.
Focus on yourself
When you're feeling tired, it's vital to refill your physical and emotional energy. Prioritise good sleep, exercise, healthy eating and social connections to help you promote balance in your life. In her book, High Octane Women: How Superachievers Can Avoid Burnout, author and psychologist Sherrie Bourg Carter says eating well, staying hydrated, exercising and getting plenty of sleep is critical when you're facing burn-out.
Change your perspective
To ensure that you don't burn-out again, you need to look for ways to make your workload easier to manage. Psychologists suggest that delegating, saying no often and writing down what makes you feel stressed at the workplace can help to avoid burn-out. In addition, you can manage your time and prioritise which tasks are more important than others. This involves managing the expectations of your clients, manager and colleagues.
Add an activity that will rejuvenate you
While this may seem counter-productive, author James Sudakow confesses that although his days were jam-packed, adding piano lessons to his schedule helped avoid burn-out. He explained that these lessons rejuvenated him and, as a result, this positive feeling carried over into his work and made him feel better.
