Thought-leadership, personal branding

For a long time society has associated brand identities with big corporate entities. With the advent of social media platforms, individuals were able to start developing personal brands in their capacity as experts or specialists in their field.  Professionals have started to realise that their reputation in the workplace contributes to their unique personal brand.

Professionals have certain characteristics that form part of their personal brand. The way they position themselves in the workplace, and their interactions with peers, forms the basis of their personal brand.

Take Elon Musk, for example. His name is associated with innovation, passion and success. From the beginning, Musk had a personal brand strategy. His ability to remain transparent and honest in his business endeavours positioned his brand as trustworthy, credible and engaging. Pioneers such as Basetsana Kumalo, former Miss South Africa, have realised that their personal brand is closely linked to their overarching reputation, built up over years through hard work, focus and commitment.

Richard Branson, the most followed professional on LinkedIn, is the quintessential example of the positive impact a well-managed personal brand can have. According to Branson, branding demands a commitment that is continuously being re-invented, which leads to the creation and maintenance of premium brands.

Building a strong personal brand is as important as building a company. If you want to be thought of as a credible professional, consistently position yourself as a thought-leader in your specific industry. This could open doors to better career opportunities in future.

 Everyone Needs a Personal Brand

The term 'personal brand' has mostly been associated with celebrities. However, it's not only for big names. Everyone needs a personal brand.

Personal branding is the practice used by many professionals to create a professional identity for themselves in order to stand out from the crowd and gain a competitive edge. It works the same way that all brands do.

Branding is everywhere, which is how brands gain a competitive edge, staying top of mind among their target market. Everything we buy or do is determined by the brands we prefer.

Ask yourself this... Wouldn't you like to be a brand that everyone wants? The candidate that is sought after by recruiters because he or she captured their attention with his or her personal brand? In specialist recruitment, presenting a professional and positive image is very important.

Creating a personal brand means that you need to focus on how you present yourself. This includes basic things like the grammar you use when sending emails, your academic background, work experience, CV and how you present yourself at interviews. All of these elements form part of your personal brand and create a lasting perception and impression. Build and perfect a positive perception which you can use to your own advantage to stand out in interviews and beyond.

It's important to work hard, be great at your job and let people recognise your talents. It's also vital to build a great personal brand and be known for the things you do in your industry. Speak and connect with the right people so that they recognise and respect you as someone who has strategically positioned yourself in the market, using your personal brand.

Make personal branding an essential part of your career. Manage it, enhance it and perfect it! By so doing, you are packaging all your strong career traits and capabilities in a way that makes people understand and relate to you.

If you're looking for a Finance job, Engineering job or an IT job, then you need a personal brand to project the best person you believe you are.

Network Recruitment, job

personal brandYou are unique. Your core values, qualities, professional experience, and style differentiate you from every other person applying for the same job.

As the job market becomes more competitive, candidates start to seem alike on paper. This means that the chance that a recruiter will spot you is dwindling, but not impossible. This is where your personal brand becomes important.

If you're falling short of securing a job interview, it might be time to look at whether your personal brand is correctly representing who you truly are.

Vicki Morris, a career happiness coach and founder of InspiredWork.com, says that crafting a personal brand is about being informative and inspiring - and being able to take your authentic self and reflect it on the outside for people to see.

"It is about people remembering your actions, emotions, your expertise and your human side. Your personal brand has to be something of value and only you can provide that," she says.

Make your personal brand more authentic by:

Being consistent on all your social media platforms
To hold your personal brand together, you need to be consistent. This means that all of your social media profiles should be cohesive and display the same message - which leaves a lasting impression.

Pick a voice and stick to it
Speak with one voice. Whether you're at work or at home, you need to be the same person or you're not being authentic. You absolutely cannot construct a successful personal brand if people say different things about who you truly are.

Know your speciality
The sooner you know what sets you apart from the competition career-wise, the easier it will be for a specialist recruiter to grasp what you are about and know how they can assist you.

The Oxford dictionary defines authentic as of undisputed origin and not a copy – genuine! Accurate! Reliable! If you've already made personal branding a priority, make sure it's showcasing your real self at all times. If you haven't made it a priority, start today and ensure that it's representing the real you.

social media personal brandingDid you know that recruiters are using social media as a tool to evaluate potential candidates?

The truth is that social media, when used carelessly, can hinder your personal brand.

A personal brand should communicate your appearance, professionalism, demeanour and the way you approach situations. Are you impulsive and hot-headed, funny and outgoing or are you a relentless whiner? All of this can be uncovered about you from the social media platforms you are active on.

Platforms like Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram and Google+ give recruiters a glimpse of who you are. Believe it or not, whether you're constantly tagged in questionable posts or images - they can affect whether a job offer is extended to you or not.

Employers are looking for polished, professional and respectful candidates to join their teams. This doesn't include people who vent on social media about how bad their current employer is, regardless of the situation.

Follow these tips to make your social activity work for you:

  • If it slanders your employer, do not post it
  • Think about cleaning up your social platforms, which means removing and untagging all the images that reflect negatively on you as well as removing any negative remarks that may put you in a bad light
  • Constantly tweet or post relevant industry articles as it shows interest in your industry
  • DON'T have inappropriate profile pictures on your social pages
  • Don't make careless statements
  • And lastly, consider changing your privacy settings on your social platforms

70% of recruiters have said that they've rejected candidates due to what they see online.

Keep in mind that, when it comes to building a reputable personal brand, not all attention is good attention. Social media has the ability to kill your brand or keep it alive – think of it as a double-edged sword. Be vigilant about what you post, be proactive and create an impression that will get you that IT, Finance or Engineering job.
